Overnight Success Does Not Exist, and Luck Ain’t Coming to Dinner

Rarely do I write a blog post because I am compelled to share a message in the here and now. If I am moved to speak on a topic immediately, I typically share a message in 140 (or perhaps 280) characters via a tweet or two, or I take to Facebook to post. And move on.

However, this message from GaryVee is too powerful to simply share on Twitter or Facebook, to let dangle in the wind for 15 minutes before disappearing. I’m posting this for you and me, for when we need a reminder about why we do this thing called entrepreneurship.

How this post came about

Sooo, I was looking for something to listen to while I worked today, I guess I unconsciously needed a kick in the pants?? I started skimming social media, saw someone post about GaryVee’s latest video about being an Overnight Success, and intuition told me I’d be ready to put in a good 8 to 10 hours after watching this video. So I watched it. Sometimes I’m obedient to intuition, and I am thankful today was one of those days!

Overnight Success Does Not Exist, and Luck Ain’t Coming to Dinner

Let’s back up, who is GaryVee?

Gary Vaynerchuk (whom I absolutely LOVE) has been on his hustle and grind for well over half of his life. To many he just has that thing, that certain something that screams celebrity. To many he is an overnight success. Y’all don’t know the half.

For those who don’t know Gary Vee (as he is known), he is online royalty, an entrepreneurial genius. It’s not just my opinion, it’s a fact. Period. Ask around.

He is the brand. I could pick his face out of a crowd as easily as I could spot Oprah and my mama.

He is the face of Wine Library TV, #AskGaryTV podcast and the NY Times Best Selling Author of new classics like Jab Jab Jab Right Hook, The Thank You Economy, and Crush It! I recommend the print version so you can highlight and take notes.

Why do you deserve to take the next 8 minutes to watch this video?

There are 1440 minutes in each day. Factor in roughly 8 hours of sleep and you are awake about 960 minutes of each day. The next 8 minutes you spend watching this video account for less than 1% of your day.

If you are not a doctor prepping for surgery, or a chemist getting ready to mix up a cancer-curing tincture, you and your business deserve to hear and heed message.

Notice I said hear AND heed.

You need to know that success is a long arduous process for most, which means putting in the work when you don’t feel like, accepting opportunities that are outside of your comfort zone, crying and sweating because you feel alone, and persevering when you think no one is watching.

Staying committed to your goals and vision when the sales aren’t coming in, page views are abysmal (for bloggers), or money going out is more than the money coming is just crazy to most people, and it ain’t for the faint of heart.

But… if your heart beats to the entrepreneurial drum (boom chicka boom), you and your business deserve the next 8 minutes. Don’t save this for later. There is always something to do. Later never comes. You need this now.

Watch this. And… you’re welcome.

One of my favorite quotes from GaryVee in this video: It is a gift to wake up in the morning and be able to do what you want for the rest of your life. The way you do that is by becoming a quote (unquote) “overnight success.”

Ciao,

What is one thing you took away from this video that you want to spray paint on your wall?

Haha; funny caption! I like your out, though. You are completely spot on. Success is not simple and automatic. You have to work hard at it to achieve what you want.

  • Mr. Gary vee, gives confirmation of knowing and doing are two different things!! Success takes hard work. Investing time, being dedicated to your future goals and achievements requires patients and sacrifice.

You are so right lovely lady! None of us are able to be successful overnight or without a lot of work. Great article. Keep up the great work and live unstoppable!

Excellent post! I love the title, and will probably overuse in my daily speech, ha ha. I can’t get the video to run, so I’ll try again later. Thanks!

This is a great blog post and right on point! Sometimes we are too hard on ourselves and want everything now!

    • Yes we are much too hard on ourselves Medina, myself included. Why we expect overnight stardom I’ll never know! Thanks for commenting:)
